You are expected to keep an open mind, receptive to the unexpected, the absolutely unplanned, for as long as possible. In short, the well-written report or essay will be free of grammatical and mechanical errors; it will conform to the conventions of standard academic English; it will avoid traces of inappropriate dialect or colloquialisms; and it will be sensitive to the level of formality called for by an assignment.
Students of the natural sciences may discover that a given organizational plan abstract, introduction, methods and materials, results, discussion is preferred by a journal, even though the organizational strategies they learned for freshman English papers were virtually limitless.
It would be irresponsible of this committee to propose general characteristics of good writing in a manner that ignored discipline-specific differences in the particular definitions of those characteristics. You must generally support all assertions that something is true by providing your reader with evidence for your claim.
And so each area of study, each discipline, each assignment and instructor, values a particular approach to "truth"; you are expected to be trying that method out as you write your paper.
Formal methodology is de-emphasized; individual interpretations, emphasized. What follows from that? A less competent writer may be only marginally effective in only one discipline, and the incompetent writer will be incapable of writing effectively according to the conventions of any discipline.
Academic Writing in Explicit Form The author of an academic writing is responsible for make it explicit and for making clear how different parts of the text are connected between them and why are they relevant for the central theme.
However, there are certain qualities that most examples of good writing share. Provide Evidence Writers construct their arguments based largely on the evidence they gather.
Ask Questions That Matter This should be linear, having a main idea or theme, followed constantly. No concession should be made from these eight features and they should be kept in mind at all times by anyone attempting to be an academic writer.
One additional quality, not part of this list, but nevertheless, very important, is creativity.
The rare student might write in a way that is both conceptually pointless and grammatically perfect. In areas such as Cultural Studies and the Arts, however, human difference, individual style and voice are embraced.
